Mr. Scott King
Director of Bands

Scott King is in his sixth year as head band director at
Starr’s Mill High School in Fayetteville, Georgia. Since coming to Starr’s
Mill, the Wind Ensemble has flourished under Mr. King’s direction. The
Starr’s Mill High School Wind Ensemble has performed at the Bands of
America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana, GMEA
convention, University of Georgia Jan-Fest, University of South Carolina
Band Clinic, and Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic. The
ensemble also has received straight superior ratings with all As on stage,
sight-reading, and student conductor for the past three years. The
individual musicians also excel with numerous participants in the Georgia
All-State Band (2006 - most participants in Georgia, 2005 – 2nd most
students chosen in Georgia), District 6 Honor Band, and GHP. The Starr’s
Mill High School Panther Pride Marching Band has also been very successful
by winning three grand championships, numerous best in class awards in all
facets, and a superior rating at the Atlanta BOA regional. |
Mr. King also was the band director at
Pepperell High School in Lindale, Georgia. The AA-sized band was highly
successful with its marching and concert programs. In Mr. King’s three
year tenure, the marching band won four grand championships (including
Festival of States in St. Petersburg, FL), several best in class awards in
drum major, color guard, and percussion, and performed for a Jacksonville
State University football game. The concert band received primarily
straight superior ratings with Grade 6 literature, performed at
Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic, University of Georgia
Jan-Fest, South Carolina Band Clinic, and Festival of States Concert Band
competition (which Pepperell won) and had numerous district 7 honor band,
all-state, and GHP participants.
Mr. King holds music degrees from Jacksonville State University and
VanderCook College of Music. He is a multiple recipient of the National
Band Association’s “Citation of Excellence” and the 2005 “Who’s
Who Among America’s Teachers” award. Mr. King is a former member and
instructor for the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. He is a member
of MENC, GMEA, NBA, and PAS.

Dr.
Andrew Poor

Andrew F. Poor is currently the
Associate Director of Bands at Starr’s Mill High School in
Fayetteville, Georgia, having served in this position since 2005.
Furthermore, he is currently on the part-time music education
faculty of the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University.
Prior to coming to Starr’s Mill, Dr. Poor served as Director of
Bands at Osborne High School in Marietta, Georgia, and Haines City
High School, in Haines City, Florida, where he also served as
Manager of the Visual and Performing Arts Department as well as the
Co-Chair/Editor of the Secondary School Music Curriculum Committee
for Polk County. He was also the Director of Bands at Beaumont
Middle School in Kissimmee, Florida, from 1988 to 1991.
In 1988, Dr. Poor graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education
degree from the University of Florida, which was awarded with High
Honors. His graduate studies were completed at the University of
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he earned both a
Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance in 1993 and a Doctor
of Music Education degree in 1999. While at the University of
Cincinnati, he served as a Graduate Teaching Fellow in music
education, trumpet performance, and assisted with the marching band.
In conjunction with his doctoral studies, he completed cognates in
wind conducting and trumpet performance under the guidance of Eugene
Migliaro Corporon, Dr. Terrence Milligan, and Alan Siebert, and
focused his research efforts on middle school music education.

As an educator, he has taught at the middle school, high school, and
college level, having served in a variety of capacities at each
educational level. He has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among
America's Teachers six times and selected for inclusion among Who's Who
in America three consecutive years (2002-2004). In 2004, Dr. Poor was
one of the first band directors in Georgia to become a National Board
Certified Teacher after completing a rigorous two-year process and
meeting all requirements set forth by the National Board of Professional
Teaching Standards.
Under Dr. Poor’s direction, his ensembles have given several notable
performances and consistently receive top ratings in all areas. In 1997,
the Haines City Wind Symphony performed at the Florida Music Educators
State Convention. In 2002, the Osborne High School Band was selected as
the United States of America Representative at the 17th Annual
International Cultural Festival in Tottori, Japan, and was the featured
music ensemble at the Festival. As a performer, he has played
professionally with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra under Keith
Lockhart, as well as the Cincinnati Ballet, Richmond Symphony, Walt
Disney World Band, and the critically-acclaimed Cincinnati Wind
Symphony, appearing on numerous recordings and nationally-televised
broadcasts with these ensembles.
Dr. Poor has authored several articles on a wide array of musical,
pedagogical, and educational topics that have appeared in the Florida
Music Director, Journal of the International Trumpet Guild, Journal of
the International Marching Institute, and Quarterly Journal for Music
Teaching and Learning. Moreover, he has made presentations at state
conferences in Ohio, Georgia, and Florida on the topics of teacher
education, brass pedagogy, music curriculum development, and block
scheduling.
Dr. Poor is an active composer with his numerous works being performed
by middle school, high school and college level ensembles. He has served
as the chair of a twelve-school consortium that has commissioned five
notable works for wind band over the past nine years. He continues to
provide service to the music teaching profession through his active
involvement in curriculum development for two different districts as
well as his extensive adjudication efforts of music groups locally,
regionally and nationally. He has served as an adjudicator for Georgia
Music Educators Association, East Tennessee State Band and Orchestra
Association, Drum Corps International, Bands of America, Winter Guard
International, Kentucky Music Educators Association, as well as numerous
local band circuits. He completed a six-year term in 2005 as a member of
the Drum Corps International Judge Administration team as the Chief
Brass Judge. He currently resides in Senoia, Georgia, with his wife,
Marilyn, and his two children, Kayla, who is a horn player of the Rising
Starr Symphonic Band, and his son, Addison, who can often be seen
conducting the band at most Starr’s Mill High School events.

Mr. Deryl
Colson

Mr. Deryl Colson
("Mr. C") is a school-based speech-language pathologist with the Fayette
County Board of Education. He moved to Atlanta in 1992 from Mississippi
in which he obtained both his B.A. and M.S. from the University of MS
(Ole Miss). This will be Mr. Colson's second year to work with the
Starr's Mill color guard program. He has taught numerous camps, clinics,
and guard programs across the nation since 1983 and was the color guard
director at Collins Hill High School (Suwanee, GA) from 1995-2005. He
was a member of the Final Analysis Independent A Winter Guard [WGI 1986
Gold Medalist] and the State Street Review Winter Guard [WGI 1988 Gold
Medalist]. Under the leadership of Mr. Colson, the Starr's Mill color
guard program has achieved great success in both its marching guard
program as well as its winter guard programs. |
